Polar Plunge: History Gives Us Tools to Communicate in the Future

In 1916 an unknown photographer gave us an untitled image of three friends diving into Lake Michigan on New Year’s Eve. The photograph existed in obscurity until Steve Lister, the grandson of one of the pictured swimmers, Gustav “Gus” Marx, came into possession of an old family photo album simply titled, “Pictures of winter swimming, season 1916-17 at McKinley Beach.”
